Competence Committee

I have ‘practiced' as a psychologist in Alberta for 38 years—I have come to appreciate the word “practice” because I do believe that regardless of our years in the field, each of us needs to continue striving to become our most competent selves in this ever-changing, expanding and shifting field of psychology. What is considered a ‘truth’ or evidence-based in psychology today may prove to be a falsehood down the road. Believing that we each need to engage in life-long or at least career-long learning is why I joined the Competence Committee. While some might consider me to be of retirement age, I hope to continue practicing for a number of years yet. I have a private practice in Medicine Hat, where I work with children, teens and their families as well as adults. I work hard to stay connected with my colleagues in the Medicine Hat area by organizing book clubs and regular gatherings as I believe that actively participating with a community of psychologists encourages my growth and challenges my blind spots, and it hopefully provides the same to my younger colleagues. When not engaged in full-time work and learning, I love to travel with my husband. We have one son and one grandson, both of whom live in Medicine Hat so we get to spend many hours with both of them. My wellness activities include golf, pilates, yoga, and walking/hiking.  

I am a Registered Psychologist who resides in Calgary. I am the co-owner of Inner SolutionsTM, a private practice that specializes in DBT and trauma treatment. I am certified in DBT through the DBTâ-Linehan Board of Certification. I joined the Competence Comittee out of a desire to reach fellow psychologists with an important message – that it is vital that psychologists engage in evidence-based practices and pay attention to adherence in treatment models in order to achieve the most positive outcomes for their clients. I hope to encourage other psychologists to be engaged in lifelong learning, in staying connected with other psychologists, and in polishing their therapeutic practices in order to make the most significant impact possible with clients. 

I have enjoyed practicing clinical psychology in the Lower Mainland of BC, Calgary, Whitehorse, and rural Yukon. I have provided assessment and individual / group therapy services in public mental health settings, most recently with Alberta Health Services until 2017. Since then, I have been in the private sector, and since 2022 I have been in full-time private practice. Supervising practicum students, psychology and psychiatry residents, and provisionally registered psychologists has added another level of satisfaction to my work life. My previous volunteer experience with CAP was serving on the Oral Examinations Committee. With that Committee no longer existing, I joined the Continuing Competence Committee in order to continue contributing to decision-making regarding psychologists’ ongoing practice improvement.

Megan Kontrimas (she/her) works as a registered psychologist in Mohkinstsis/Calgary, Alberta. Her private practice is located at Being Human Club, a feminist and trauma-informed therapy space that she helped launch in 2021. Megan uses a person centred therapy approach with individuals impacted by anxiety, trauma, stress/burnout, eating disorders, difficult life transitions, and low self-worth. Megan decided to join the Competence Committee in order to contribute to, connect with, and meaningfully participate in the improvement of the psychology community. She hopes to use this opportunity to help psychologists uphold their professional responsibility to continue to develop as effective, ethical, and engaged practitioners.

I am a psychologist working at my private practice in Drumheller, AB, working with anxiety, depression, trauma, and performance, amongst other things. I joined the Competence Committee as a way to increase my personal knowledge regarding competency and share this knowledge with others.

I enjoyed a rewarding career in the field of medical rehabilitation psychology with AHS and the GOA before moving to private practice in Calgary. I now work exclusively with adults who have sustained a medical illness or injury, or who have had work-related traumatic exposure.  

I joined the Competene Committee to understand the program myself, and to keep connected and involved with esteemed psychology colleagues. I believe in lifelong learning, and I have always practiced this myself. I also enjoy maintaining a volunteer role with a professional organization. 

I am a Registered Psychologist residing in Southern Alberta on Treaty 7 territory. I have worked in the healthcare field since 2006 and currently work in private practice doing individual counselling, supervision and consultation. My identities and locations include white settler, middle class, cisgender, queer and lesbian, parent, and woman. I pass as able-bodied however I experience chronic pain. I am larger bodied but do benefit from many of the privileges afforded to thinner bodies. I am especially passionate in my work about gender and sexuality, kink and sexual practices, internalized weight stigma and fatphobia, trauma and attachment, dissociative disorders including dissociative identity disorder (multiple personality disorder), religious trauma, interpersonal violence, abuse, and mental health concerns of all kinds. I joined the Competence Committee in order to better support members in their desired learning and growth, and to be involved with my profession on another level.

Brittany is a Registered Psychologist who earned her Masters of Science in School and Applied Child Psychology from the University of Calgary. Since completing her graduate training, Brittany has worked in specialized clinical, private, and public educational settings where she has gained experience providing remedial intervention, consultation, and assessment to individuals, families, and children. Specifically, she has extensive training, supervision, and experience conducting psychological assessments and assessments currently take up 100% of her caseload. She currently is the clinical director of Onyx Assessments in Sherwood Park and is a contract psychologist in Edmonton and Airdrie. Brittany is also licenced to practice in PEI where she completes virtual assessments as needed. 

Brittany believes in the importance of continuing education to maintain competence in the ever-changing and evolving field of psychology. She is passionate about learning and participates in weekly webinars to further her own development. She joined the Continuing Competence Committee to help others ignite a passion for learning and understand how CAP supports and encourages this pursuit.

I am Aimee Reimer and I work in Edmonton. My work is a balance of seeing adult clients in my private practice, providing supervision to registered provisional psychologists, and teaching at a local university. I joined the Competence Committee as a way to give back to the professional. I want to support psychologists in their ongoing personal development and learning, so that we can provide the best services to the clients we work with.   

Dr. Shelley Skelton resides in Calgary where she has a private practice, specializing in trauma therapy and also teaches in counselling programs at the post-secondary level. In the past year, Dr. Skelton has been working as a supervisor for provisional psychologists and decided to expand her involvement with CAP by joining the Competence Committee.

I am a Registered Psychologist and an Assistant Deputy Registrar at the College of Alberta Psychologists (CAP). Part of my work includes registration-related matters, regulatory navigation (and professional guidance), and the CCP. I serve as a liaison between the Competence Committee and CAP.

Dr. Hanson is a Registered Psychologist and Acting Assistant Deputy Registrar (ADR) at CAP. As ADR, he is the Ex-Officio member of the Competence Committee (CC) and a liaison between CAP and CC. 

As a Regulator and former tenured Professor/Director of nationally accredited doctoral programs in clinical/counselling psychology, he’s interested in clinical training and supervision, competency assessment and benchmarking, and Measurement-Based Care (MBC). Clinically speaking, he specializes in Collaborative/Therapeutic Assessment (C/TA), psychosocial oncology, and sleep problems.

For fun, he writes children’s books, movie screenplays, and Op-Eds on hockey analytics.

Dr. Hanson lives in St. Albert, AB, with his wife, three sons, and two dogs.
